Toca Introduces a Dazzling Signature Conga Set for Jimmie Morales

Most musicians wait a lifetime for the chance to design their own instruments — but most musicians aren’t Jimmie Morales. Almost as soon as he signed on as a Toca endorser a year ago, the celebrated percussionist for such salsa and Latin jazz stars as Gilberto Santa Rosa, Willie Rosario, and Edwin Colon Zayas began sketching out the design of his dream conga set.

He’s now ready to share his vision with the world, and it’s a sight to behold.

Built around seamless fiberglass shells with an oversize belly that provide a wide tuning range — from deep bass tones to crisp highs — Toca Jimmie Morales Signature Congas are perfectly balanced to perform equally well on stage and in the studio. A nod to Morales’ foundation in salsa drumming traditions, models are 28" tall and include a 12.5" tumba, 11.75" conga, 11" quinto, and a paring of 7" and 8.5" bongos.

Black mirror chrome fittings include six lugs for precise tuning (four on each bongo), sturdy mounting brackets for stand-up performance, and ergonomically contoured EasyPlay hoops to reduce hand fatigue. All hardware is isolated from the shell with plastic gaskets, and a protective sleeve to prevent cracks and scuffs encircles the bottom lip of the shell. Each drum is fitted with a commemorative Toca badge featuring Jimmie’s personal logo.

The icing on the cake is the set’s stunning Violet Sparkle finish, which is offset by black Remo Skyndeep™ heads emblazoned with Morales’ logo. “The first time I played congas professionally was with Tito Allen,” Morales explains. “My dad gave me a set of violet drums and I was in love with them.”

Morales looks forward to playing his new rig on the road with Santa Rosa throughout the USA and Europe in 2019, as well as performing clinics in the spring and summer. Toca Jimmie Morales Signature Congas will debut in booth 6404 at the 2019 Winter NAMM Show.
